3D Giant Screen film The Ultimate Wave Tahiti has garnered accolades at this year’s Newport Beach Film Festival and Blue Ocean Film Festival & Conservation Summit. The film took home Outstanding Achievement in Action Sport Filmmaking in Newport Beach, and is the finalist in two categories (Ocean Sports and Theatrical) at Monterey’s Blue Ocean Film Festival. The Ultimate Wave Tahiti follows nine-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater and Tahitian surfer Raimana Van Bastolaer as they seek out the best waves at Tahiti’s famed reef at Teahupo’o. The film is currently playing in IMAX and other Giant Screen theaters. Second quarter 2010 reported net income increased to $13.3 million, or $0.20 per diluted share, compared to reported second quarter 2009 net income of $2.6 million, or $0.05 per diluted share. Adjusted net income, which excludes the impact of variable stock compensation, increased 35% to $8.4 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, compared to adjusted net income of $6.2 million, also $0.13 per diluted share, on the same basis in last year’s quarter, reflecting the year-over-year increase in weighted average shares outstanding. A foreign exchange loss related to the Canadian dollar and expenses associated with the increase in global sales activity and new business initiatives negatively impacted the quarter by approximately $0.03 per share. 3D Giant Screen film The Ultimate Wave Tahiti opens in the Montreal Science Centre’s IMAX today. NFB.ca blog writes: The apple, the saying goes, doesn’t fall far from the tree. Stephen Low, one of legendary NFB filmmaker and producer Colin Low’s three sons, is presenting his own latest film this summer. The documentary, titled Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D , is a high-octane surfing film featuring 9-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater set in the volcanic islands of French Polynesia. In a heart-warming “like father like son” twist, the film is both 3D and IMAX, two innovations his father helped pioneer at the NFB. Colin Low, most known for films such as Universe (used as a source document by Stanley Kubrick for 2001: A Space Odyssey ), City of Gold (cited by Burns as inspiration for the so-called Ken Burns effect), or In the Labyrinth (a groundbreaking multi-screen film presented at Expo 67 in Montreal), was an influential player in the early days of both giant-screen and stereoscopic filmmaking. The movies will be made available with the purchase of select Blu-ray 3D players, 3D TVs and 3D projectors.
