‘Superbad’ Sequel ‘Never’ Happening, ‘Pineapple Express’ Sequel Hopes Dim Too… And That’s Okay

Sad news today for fans of wacky Judd Apatow -produced comedies. Or maybe not. Let’s go through the news, then you can decide for yourselves. The Playlist spoke with Evan Goldberg at San Diego Comic-Con last week. Goldberg is of course the wiz who wrote both “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express.” Sequel rumors and talk have followed both of those projects, so The Playlist asked him straight out: what’s the deal here? On the “Superbad” front, he gave what is perhaps the most definitive answer yet on the status/presumed status of a sequel: “Never, at any juncture in the history of life, have we considered ‘Superbad 2.’” Really not much to say to that, eh? Prospects for a “Pineapple Express” sequel sound better. According to Goldberg, he and his cohorts have pressured the studio to do it “but they require no pressure.” Meaning they want to do it. Problem is, everyone’s all booked up! “We kind of made the classic mistake of people who had a successful film: we then booked everything we could because we thought it’d be our only chance,” he explained. “It still could be our only chance, but man are we booked.” Now I know some of your are going to be bummed out by this news… but maybe it’s not such a bad thing. I loved loved “Superbad” and was kind of meh on “Pineapple Express” — maybe I wasn’t in the right frame of mind for that stoner comedy — but in my honest opinion, the assembled players have leveraged the success of …

Although he’d been dormant since his 2007 appearance in “Tropic Thunder,” the abrasive, overbearing mega-producer Les Grossman is back in a big way thank to his appearance at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards. And he’s pals with Tom Cruise , so that helps. It was learned shortly after the Movie Awards that Grossman made such a splash he’s getting his very own movie. MTV’s Josh Horowitz spoke to “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” actor Bill Hader at San Diego Comic-Con last week — Hader has a part-time gig as Grossman’s assistant — and he was more than happy to share an update on the status of the planned comedy. “As I know right now, Mike Bacall, who co-wrote ‘Scott Pilgrim,’ is working on a script for a Les Grossman movie,” he said. “I actually just saw [Bacall] last night and he was like, ‘I’ve been writing for you!’ We’ll see if anything happens with that, but that would be a lot of fun.” In reality — and you should all know this — Grossman has become something of an alter-…

‘Transformers 3′ Set Footage Features Gunfire, Explosions And Skyscraper Base Jumping

Shooting for ” Transformers 3 ” is well underway in Chicago right now. The movie isn’t out until next July, but it takes awhile to digitally create those massive robot aliens and stick them into the movie. You know how it is with director Michael Bay : wherever he goes, a warzone soon follows. Such is the case with this footage from the Chicago shoot, which you can find after the jump. I have no idea what’s going on in this scene, but I’d wager it has something to do with Decepticons tearing ass across the city. When will those puny humans learn that their tiny bullets have no effect on Transformers. It sure isn’t going to be this movie, as the set footage illustrates. Also– Megan Fox replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley… do you think her hair naturally billows like that? Or are they just pointing a fan at her?

Josh Hutcherson’s Spider-Man screen test went up at Latino Review . Though I’m sure they’ll be pulled soon it’s fun to watch. It’s actually interesting to see how much effort went into these screen tests. Wouldn’t it be great to see all of them back to back? We’re talking wire stunts, editing, scene recreations from the original Spider-Man . Everything. Plus, it’s not one of those audition tapes that makes the actor look bad. ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Is Very ‘Emotional,’ Says Star Bridget Moynahan

San Diego Comic-Con has gifted us with our first extended look at “Battle: Los Angeles,” the alien disaster movie from director Jonathan Liebesman (“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning”) and starring Aaron Eckhart and Bridget Moynahan: first a viral campaign and then this afternoon’s panel. Before all this went down, though, we had a chance to chat with Moynahan about the film, and she had some surprising things to say — namely what separates “Battle” from previous alien invasion flicks. “It’s actually very emotional,” she told MTV News. “I can’t even tell you — when I saw parts of it recently, I was crying. It’s just got such heart to the movie. The director shot such a beautiful movie, so hopefully the editing and everything is going to pull together, but it was a really good story.” How the whole thing “pulls together,” Eckhart told us last year , will be with a gritty, ultra-realistic vibe. “Jonathan’s gonna make it real, like a ‘Black Hawk Down’ sort of feel,” the actor explained. “It’s gonna be an intense, action killer movie. It’s about a squad of Marines that goes and takes on aliens. It’s gonna be a kick-butt movie.” “Battle: Los Angeles” hits theaters on March 11, 2011.

1. ” Inception ” ($60.4 million) 2. ” Despicable Me ” ($32.7 million) 3. ” The Sorcerer’s Apprentice ” ($17.4 million) 4. ” The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ” ($13.5 million) 5. ” Toy Story 3 ” ($11.7 million) The mind is the scene of the crime, and judging by the weekend’s box office results, many of you were witnesses as Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” arrived in theaters this weekend with enough fanfare to score an easy first place finish ahead of it’s competitors. Starring an impressive cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page and more, Nolan’s “Inception” emerged from it’s first weekend at the box office with a gold medal worth $60.4 million, a very impressive result for a major blockbuster without any previously established material to back it up. With rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike, look for “Inception” to stay towards the top of the box office charts for several weeks to come. Isaiah Mustafa isn’t a household name, but you’ve no doubt seen the man’s work. Let me break it down for you: look at your television screen. Now back to me. Now back to your television screen. There’s a man on a horse. Back to me. That man is the Old Spice Guy, better known as Isaiah Mustafa. Everything’s better when you can put a name to the face. Already a hit thanks to his work in those commercials, Mustafa’s going the distance with his own YouTube Channel , fielding questions from fans and even pitching himself as a candidate to play Luke Cage in a Marvel Studios film — which, in all honesty, is an utterly awesome idea. Even if Mustafa as Cage doesn’t pan out, at the very least this guy needs a major Hollywood gig, pronto. To expedite the process a bit, we’re pitching a few Mustafa-centric ideas after the jump! The “Terminator” Franchise With the state of the ” Terminator ” series currently in limbo — not just because of legal shenanigans but also due to ” Terminator Salvation ” being, well, not great — the franchise could really use a booster shot. Cue Mustafa, who could join the series as the newest cybernetic defender on the rebellion’s side. Or, perhaps, he’s coming after John Connor. Either way, watching the Old Spice Guy travel backwards in time to do some damage would be amazing and, most likely, hilarious. ‘Inception’ Gets Us Thinking About Other Awesome Dream Sequences

” Inception ” is out today. You know this. I’ve been crowing about it all day. All week. The whole Internet has. It is freaking fantastic. Some critics disagree, and that’s cool. In my own opinion though, it is director Christopher Nolan ’s finest effort to date. I’ve intentionally avoided the more spoiler-y stories this week, the ones that ponder elements from the movie. You should all go see it and judge it by its own merits. I don’t think it’s any mystery anymore though that ( minor spoiler alert ) the movie deals with dreams. Film and TV is rife with cool dream sequences, but the ones featured in “Inception” definitely carve their own unique space in the realm of such things. Still, there are some classic dream sequences out there. A few of which I’ve chosen to highlight in this blog post as my favorites.
