Russell Brand To Swash Buckles As Swordsman Robert Hawkwood

Here’s a pretty perfect bit of casting. Russell Brand is going to star in “Hawkwood,” an action/comedy about real-life 14th century mercenary John Hawkwood. You know how Brand is frequently compared with or considered to be a real-life version of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow character from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies? Well “Hawkwood” will give him a chance to try that role on for real. The title character is a swashbuckling rogue, which is sort of how I envision Brand in his day-to-day life. Maybe without the sword. Deadline reports that he’ll produce “Hawkwood” with Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark and Nicky Weinstock. No director has been announced, but Jared Stern will write the script. Stern recently did some work on the script for the “Arthur”

Thought I’d share a fun little trivia nugget from a recent interview with the actress Robin Bartlett. You may remember Bartlett from her recurring role on TV’s Mad About You or as the unusually named “Aretha” from Postcards from the Edge . “Are you black?” “… no .” Robin: I loved playing Aretha. That was another good piece of writing. Carrie Fisher is no slouch in that area. Bartlett has appeared in two Streep movies (she’s also in Sophie’s Choice ) and now she’s taking over a role many viewers will automatically associate with the great one herself. She’s currently in rehearsals for the mammoth “Mother Pitt” role in Angels in America (it’s actually six roles on stage). The classic play is getting a New York revival this fall. Tickets go on sale on August 3rd . (I’ve just finished a magazine piece on the revival — yes print still exists.) During our chat we talked briefly about her big scene in Shutter Island earlier this year. Leo is questioning all the asylum crazies and we see Robin madly scribble something dramatic into his notebook before sliding it his way, all sneaky like. Nathaniel: Is that your actual handwriting? Robin: If that was my handwriting, you wouldn’t be able to read it. Nathaniel: [Laughter] The magic of the movies! *

3D Giant Screen film The Ultimate Wave Tahiti opens in the Montreal Science Centre’s IMAX today. NFB.ca blog writes: The apple, the saying goes, doesn’t fall far from the tree. Stephen Low, one of legendary NFB filmmaker and producer Colin Low’s three sons, is presenting his own latest film this summer. The documentary, titled Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D , is a high-octane surfing film featuring 9-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater set in the volcanic islands of French Polynesia. In a heart-warming “like father like son” twist, the film is both 3D and IMAX, two innovations his father helped pioneer at the NFB. Colin Low, most known for films such as Universe (used as a source document by Stanley Kubrick for 2001: A Space Odyssey ), City of Gold (cited by Burns as inspiration for the so-called Ken Burns effect), or In the Labyrinth (a groundbreaking multi-screen film presented at Expo 67 in Montreal), was an influential player in the early days of both giant-screen and stereoscopic filmmaking. Apple has debuted the new trailer from Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, Sucker Punch . Set in the 1950s, Sucker Punch follows Babydoll (Emily Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. With IMAX’s latest theater deal in Russia, the company is set as one of Canada’s hot stocks this week.
